Gemas Road Roti Canai

Before we start, there are a few Malaysian terms i must explain, lest some non-Malaysian readers get confused.

Roti Canai - Indian- influenced flatbread dish
Kuah - The gravy that you eat with your food, usually curry or dal
Banjir - It means flood in english, but in this case it's referring to drenching your meal with gravy
Telur Mata - Egg fried sunny side up

The Roti Canai Stall
Roti Canai, the most basic of all Malaysian food, you can tell whether a shop is good just by trying out their Roti Canai. When I eat Roti Canai, there are 2 factors that I usually take into account that contribute to their overall tastiness, the first thing is the Roti Canai itself and the second is the "kuah" or curry that comes with it. There are dozens of types of Roti Canai - Roti Telur, Roti Tampal, Roti Tisu, Roti Beckham, but to keep things simple the most basic kind of Roti is just Roti Kosong whcih means just plain old Roti with no extras.

The Menu
As you can see from the picture of the menu above, there is a wide selection of  Roti to choose from, but being the basic Malaysian boy I am, I opted for a simple Roti Kosong Banjir (the owner recommended me to "Banjir"  it). The Roti tasted decent by my standards, meaning it was your basic plain old no frills Roti and was nothing to shout about, but the "kuah" on the other hand was really rich in flavour.

Roti Kosng Banjir

The stall had a really wide selection of "kuah" , ranging from fish curry, chicken curry , mutton curry, beef curry and the classic dal. The "kuah" I ordered was mutton curry mixed with chicken curry, it packed quite a bit of heat but you could really taste the mutton flavour.

Roti Kosong Bannjir Tambah Telur Mata

After tasting how good the curry was, i feeling abit adventurous, I decided to order Roti Kosong Banjir Tambah Telur Mata with a side of mutton. The mutton was really tender and I really enjoyed how it melted in your mouth when you chew it! The runny yolk of the egg pairs perfectly with the thick curry and goes really well with a bite of Roti.

TLDR:
Conclusion: The Roti Canai was nothing to shout about, but the "kuah" was amazing!
