Ah Wang Cafe (Toast Bread and Eggs)

Ah Wang Cafe
The Entrance

I recently discovered this new coffee shop stall in the Tanjung Bungah area, and it was pretty hard to find as it was quite hidden within the flats surrounding it. The coffee shop is called Ah Wang Cafe and is a small Hainanese owned stall that only serves Eggs and Toast and drinks, but don't let it's small exterior put you off your appetite, this stall serves some of the best eggs and toast on the island.

The 3 main types of bread that are sold - Roti Kaya, Roti Butter, and lastly Roti Kahwin. Roti Kaya means bread spread with kaya (coconut jam), Roti Butter is bread spread with butter while Roti Kahwin means bread spread with both butter and kaya. Fun fact, Kahwin means marriage in Bahasa Melayu, therefore Roti Kahwin is referring to the marriage between butter and kaya.

I ordered all 3 dishes with a side of half boiled eggs, so that i could sample each one of them. I tried the Roti Butter first, and what surprised me was the fragrance of the toasted bread, the bread used here is Benggali bread, and therefore it's crust had that additional charred taste which complimented the butter, furthermore the bread was super crunchy and tasted even better when dipped in the half boiled eggs.

Roti Kaya
I then tried the Roti Kaya, the bread was also the same as before, but the kaya was exceptionally good. The kaya which is homemade by the way, wasn't too sweet and it had a very rich coconut flavor that wasn't too overpowering. Needless to say, the sweetness of the Kaya and the faint hint of bitterness of the bread crust made a perfect combo. The Roti Kahwin i tried was also very delicious, the sweetness of the kaya paired perfectly with butter and it was truly a match made in heaven (pun intended). I heartily recommend everyone to dip their bread in half boiled eggs. If you are a coffee lover, you should really try out their Kopi- O (Black Coffee), because it's really thick and rich, as Hainanese people really take their coffee seriously and the owner is no exception.

The stall also sells Bengali bread and their special homemade kaya so feel free to bring them back home to share with your family and friends!

TLDR:
Conclusion: The bread and kaya were really amazing!
